FORMAT / DURATION 2.5-3 DAYS

The Freediver Course is usually run over 2.5 to 3 days and typically includes:

  • 2 Classroom Sessions
  • 2 Confined-Water Sessions, and
  • 2 Open-Water Sessions.

The schedule and layout/order of these sessions may vary slightly depending on weather and course locations.

Overall Course Skills

There are many skills which will be repeatedly practiced, simulated and taught throughout the duration of every course section. It should be noted in order to pass the course a student must compete all the classroom sessions as well as the the pool and ocean sessions.  Parallel to participation, a student will receive a certificate based on the skills and objectives they complete. There are both pool and ocean qualifications to pass each PFI course. If a student is only looking to pass the pool portion of the course, I am happy to accommodate but will need to be informed before the class begins.  For the Freediver course a student must preform:

  • Adequate safe buddy skills, showing how perform a rescue to the PFI standards
  • Perform a 1:30 static in the pool – with ample opportunity to increase to maximum capacity
  • Dive with proper technique to 10 meters constant weight and free immersion using correct entrance and exit techniques as well as proper recovery breathing
  • If only receiving pool cert, must complete a 25 meter dynamic plus the static

Classroom

  • Attend all classroom teaching sessions
  • Complete all quizzes in manual
  • Complete pre learning quiz before class
  • Pass final with 80 percent or more

Watermanship & Stamina

  • Prepare Freediving Equipment without Instructor Assistance
  • Demonstrate proper Entry Procedure (using best option for local conditions)
  • 25 meter no mask snorkel swim without surfacing
  • Snorkel blast clearing

Recovery breathing and coaching

  • Perform a minimum of 4 consecutive static breath-holds without any hypoxic symptoms – minimum breath hold of 1:30
  • Perform correct recovery breathing and coaching for buddy
  • Pool cert. only: Minimum of 3 dynamic performances without hypoxic symptoms along with static
  • Pool cert. only: Complete a minimum 25m dynamic apnea no hypoxic symptoms along with static

Open Water

  • Proper Recovery Breathing and Coaching
  • Six target constant ballast dives reaching minimum 10m/33ft
  • Emergency Rescue & Problem Management (Rescue Scenarios)
    • Managing an LMC and Black Out on surface and
    • Managing an underwater Black Out
  • Full mask flood and ascend at depth

COURSE LOCATIONS & FACILITIES

We are proud to offer classroom and pool sessions at Scuba Monkey Dive Center, one of north Florida’s premier diving facilities! Scuba Monkey is located at 13585 NW 101st Dr., Ste 700 Alachua, FL 32615.

Open water sessions will be held at Troy Springs, located at 674 NE Troy Springs Road
Branford, FL 32008. The water temperature at Troy Springs is 22°C / 72°F year-round!


COURSE PREREQUISITES

  • Swimming or snorkeling experience
  • Good health and fitness – see PFI Medical Form
  • 12-17 years of age allowed with guardian’s permission

COURSE EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS

For this course, each diver is responsible for bringing his or her own equipment. These are the basic equipment items you will need for taking the Freediver course.

  • Mask & Snorkel
  • Full Wetsuit (a 3mm suit is the minimum required for this course!)
  • Weight-Belt & 2-3 single pound weights
  • Fins (long fins are recommended)
  • Waterproof Timing device or Dive Computer

EQUIPMENT RECOMMENDATIONS

If you would like to get the best possible start we recommend having a solid foundation of proper freediving equipment. This will not only help you to be more successful in the course, but it will also afford you greater comfort in the water! These are just a few options we recommend to get you started, but there are plenty of other options as well so feel free to do a little research to find what best suits your preferences.

  • Masks – Salvimar Fluyd Apnea 100 mask, Cressi NANO mask
  • Snorkels – Cressi Corsica Snorkel, ScubaPro Apnea BK Snorkel
  • Wetsuits – Yazbeck (great women’s suits), Salvimar, and Cressi all make great suits
  • Weight-Belt – Any rubber weightbelt with a marseilles buckle
  • Fins – Cressi Gara 2000’s/3000’s, Cressi Modular fins, DiveR Composite Fins
  • Waterproof Timer or Freedive Computer – Timex Ironman watch, Suunto D4f

The Freediver course tuition is $395 – this fee covers the following:

  • Personalized instruction from highly trained freediving specialists, national & world record holders and/or trainer
  • 1 instructor/assistant : 5 student divers Ratio max.

  • Pool & Classroom sessions
  • Open-Water instruction
  • Certification card
